Fremont Shotokan Blackbelt Tournament – May 20.
The FSK Black Belt tournament will be Sunday May 20 in Fremont. This is a Black Belt only tournament and pre-registration is required. The flyer and registration forms are in the dojo or email lbmercado@cpspower.com for more information.
SKIF Judging Rules Review
Yudansha interested in a review class covering the rules and regulations for judging SKIF tournaments need to contact Sensei Wong.
Memorial Day
We will be closed May 28th for Memorial Day. Classes will resume as normal on Tuesday May 29th.
Nobuaki Kanazawa Sensei
Save the date – we expect to have Nobuaki Sensei in Fresno for seminars June 22nd and 23rd – details are still being worked out the dates may changes.. These seminars should not be missed!
Next Rank Test
The next rank test will be July 14th – this is not as far off as it seems so start preparing now.
Reminder – Required Equpment.
A reminder to all students: You must bring mouth piece and groin protectors (males) to each class. As sparring drills will be picking up, you may want to order your own set.

Welcome to Japan Ways Traditional Karate
Our mission is to provide excellent instruction in traditional shotokan karate and to pass on the teachings of the late Shihan Robert Halliburton. We are active members of the Shotokan Karate-do International Federation (SKIF) through our national organization, Shotokan Karate International – United States Federation (SKI-USF).
Our Dojo
Japan Way was founded in 2008 by a group of the late Shihan Robert Halliburton's black belts. Led by Sensei Steven Wong and Sensei Cleo Martin, the aim of Japan Ways is to provide a family atmoshphere where students can continue to practice and grow as karateka. We work hard, train hard and expect the best from ourselves and our students.
Our Instructors
Japan Ways' instructors all have extensive experience and are all internationally certifide with Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation. Our Chief Instructor is Sensei Steven Wong, Rokudan (6th black belt) and our Senior Instructor is Sensei Cleo Martin, Godan (5th black belt) both have been training since 1973 and 1972 respectively. All of the remaining instructors and assistant instructors have over twenty years of experience each, ensuring the highest quality instruction.

The Shinkyu Shotokan Karatedo Youth Tournament (up to 18 years old) will be Sunday April 22 in South San Francisco. This is also a pre-registration only tournament and more information is available atwww.shinkyushotokan.us

The next rank test is scheduled for April 14th at noon. Eligible students should have recieved an invitation over the last few weeks. Remember, 9th kyu and above need to have passports and all students should have patches. Note also that mouth guards and male groin protectors ARE REQUIRED.

Japan Ways has instructors and students that will be competing this Sunday at the SKI-USF National Championships. We wish them luck! There are seminars by Nobuaki Kanazawa Sensei in Sunnyvale on Friday and Saturday that are open to all students who which to attend. A flyer for the seminars is here . Nobuaki Sensei is a fantastic instructor and all students are encouraged to attend the seminars if you can. The dojo will be open for regular classes Friday and Saturday.
